Understanding Vat Purnima

Vat Purnima is a significant festival celebrated by married Hindu women for the well-being, prosperity, and longevity of their husbands. Inspired by the legendary devotion of Savitri to Satyavan, women fast and offer prayers to the Banyan tree (Vat Vriksha).

How to Celebrate: Puja Vidhi

In Dubai, where access to a Banyan tree might be limited to specific parks or temple areas, women often perform the ritual using a small Banyan twig or a mental representation of the tree at home.

1. Sankalp: Wake up during Brahma Muhurat and take a holy bath. Wear traditional attire (Saree/Lehenga) in shades of Red or Green.
2. The Puja: Place an idol of Satyavan-Savitri and Lord Yama at the base of the Banyan tree.
3. The Thread Ceremony: Tie a yellow or red raw cotton thread (Moli) around the Banyan tree trunk 7 or 108 times while circumambulating (Parikrama).
4. Offerings: Offer water, flowers, incense, and soaked chickpeas (Chana).
